Frequently-asked Questions

I have already taken the Workplace Answers online training.  Am I still required to attend this training in person?

YES.  As of October 1, 2018, our standard on-line training is no longer a valid vehicle for training. HB 1423 requires that the training that you receive be at least 2 hours, and provide an opportunity for you to ask questions and interact with the trainer- a very different experience than what is currently available on-line.

I started working with the University in October 20, 2018, and my 6 month date comes up in a few weeks.  What are my options for attending training?

If you are an employee new to the University as of October 1, 2018, you MUST take training within your first 6 months of employment.  October new hires have received an email to register for the first date offered (March 14), as it is the only date available for them to attend and remain in compliance.  Please email EEO@bowiestate.edu if you have not yet registered and will be a 6 month employee in March 2019.  Please be advised that this information will be captured and reported for the purpose of determining employee satisfaction of their probationary period.

Going forward, new employees will receive information from the Office of Equity Compliance upon our notification of their hire to inform them of this requirement and invite them to register for training by the 6 month mark.

I would like my whole department to attend training at the same time.  Is that possible?

YES. Currently, we can accommodate training for up to 50 individuals at one time. If your office and others within your division would like to attend training together, we can schedule you in advance for one of the many available 2 -hour time slots.  Please email EEO@bowiestate.edu for more information.

Great! Since my department will be training together, can you come to our building to provide the training?  We can host more than 50 people.

No.  In order to ensure an effective training experience, we are limiting each session to 50 participants.  Additionally, the Special Collections Room is equipped with what our trainers will need to effectively train during the 2 consecutive sessions.  So take a walk across our beautiful campus and come visit us for your training in our library!

We have several volunteers/grant sponsored employees in our office who are not State employees.  Should they attend this training?

Yes.  While it is not mandatory for the purpose of compliance with the State, the Office of Equity Compliance is committed to ensuring 100% training for all individuals working in any capacity at BSU. You can make arrangements to either schedule them to attend this training, or contact our office for assistance with communicating the importance of this training to them.  Please be advised that completion of this training will become a required component of volunteering and working in any capacity at BSU in the near future.

I have a disability.  Will the training provided be accessible?

Yes.  Please contact the Office of Equity Compliance at least 1 week in advance of your training date so that we may discuss your needs and be prepared to assist you.

I only work for the University part-time, and have a full-time day job in another location.  Do I still have to attend the training?

If you are receiving compensation for work from Bowie State University, you are considered a State employee.  Therefore, you must attend this training.  A failure to attend within the required time frame will have consequences.  Please contact your supervisor, who can reach out to the Office of Equity Compliance in order to determine the best time for you to attend our on-site training.

My shift does not start until 9:00 p.m.  Will there be evening training?

Currently, training is scheduled for the 2nd Thursday of each month, with the exception to April which is on the 4th Thursday, and offered at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. on those dates. Employees and managers who serve the University at other times of the day are encouraged to consider scheduling changes that would allow them to attend training during those times.  As a reminder, this will only be required once every 2 years. For assistance with scheduling and any other potential barriers to attending training, please email EEO@bowiestate.edu.

Does this apply to faculty?

YES. The law and mandate for training applies to all employees who are paid by Bowie State University.
