A Message from the President
Charting a Way Forward After Campus Altercation
Greetings BSU Community:
As many of you know, our beloved Bowie State University experienced a disturbing encounter on our campus on the late evening of Tuesday, September 22, 2020, which extended into the morning of September 23.
Immediately after receiving the report, I called for a review of the incident. I worked with university leaders to ensure that all appropriate steps were taken to protect the safety of everyone involved.
Today, Vice President for Student Affairs, Demetrius Johnson; Chief of Police, Ernest Waiters, and I, virtually convened to discuss the incident, findings from the preliminary investigation and Bowie State University’s plan for moving forward during a Press Briefing.
We are moving aggressively to unite the campus and address the needs of our students. The steps we are taking now with our students, in the wake of this incident, will build on this active work in social justice education. It is important that together we usher in a new era of social and civic-minded students, able to think critically about these issues.
I invite you to view the Press Briefing recording, as well as written versions of our prepared statements and a Frequently Asked Questions document, all available online.
