(BOWIE, Md.) — With excitement in the air and a deep sense of accomplishment, Bowie State University celebrated the achievements of the Class of 2025 during its Spring Commencement Ceremony, a milestone that coincided with the university’s 160th anniversary.
Dr. Aminta Breaux, the 10th president of Maryland’s oldest historically Black college or university (HBCU), welcomed a crowd of enthusiastic supporters, including faculty, staff, alumni, family members, and distinguished guests.
“What a tremendous honor it is to stand before you today to celebrate the Class of 2025 during our 160th anniversary year,” said Dr. Breaux. “We are gathered here not only to honor your academic achievements but also to recognize your resilience, your perseverance, and your commitment to fulfilling your purpose.”
Among the special guests were University System of Maryland Chair of the Board of Regents Linda Gooden, Regent Anwar Hasan, and keynote speaker U.S. Sen. Angela Alsobrooks. Their presence underscored the day’s significance and the accomplishments of Bowie State graduates across a range of academic programs.
Dr. Breaux reflected on Bowie State’s enduring mission, tracing its journey from its founding in 1865 in the basement of a Baltimore church to its emergence as a nationally respected institution of higher education.
“The vision and courage of our founders made this moment possible,” she said. “Their belief in education as a tool for liberation and empowerment lives on in each of you.”
The president also recognized the resilience of the graduating class, many of whom began their college journey in the shadow of a global pandemic.
“You endured isolation and a changing academic landscape, but you did not give up,” she said. “Today, you complete one chapter and begin another.”
Throughout the ceremony, the campus community united in support and celebration. Special recognition was given to the ROTC Bulldog Battalion, the University Concert Band, and the Bowie State University Choir for setting the day’s tone with pride and purpose.
Dr. Breaux also praised the university’s faculty and staff for their dedication to student success, highlighting their contributions to Bowie State’s recent milestones. These include Bowie State’s new Carnegie Research classification, Military Friendly School designation, and high-ranking graduate programs.
She concluded with a traditional presidential charge to the graduates — a call to lead, innovate, and uplift others.
“Class of 2025, you are our legacy and our future. You are scholars, leaders, innovators, and problem-solvers,” she said. “Today, as you march boldly forward, carry with you the flame of faith and the torch of truth. The world is waiting, and we know you are ready.”
Congratulations to the Bowie State University Class of 2025. Go Bulldogs and lead with purpose.
