Computer Science Students Learn to Leverage AI at Greater Impact Experience Day

Perhaps no future professionals need to understand how to leverage the power of artificial intelligence (AI) more than computer science students. The Department of Computer Science at Bowie State University recently hosted a government technology services company specializing in AI for cybersecurity as part of a collegiate series known as the Greater Impact Experience Day. Organized by Dr. Rose Shumba, chair of the Department of Computer Science, the event forged connections with Maximus, a technology company based in McLean, Virginia.
Autumn George, project manager of institutional partnerships and strategic initiatives at Maximus, helped Bowie State students explore the range of meaningful career paths that rely on AI knowledge across technology, government contracting and consulting services. George highlighted various opportunities for computer science majors and led a demonstration on how to use AI tools more effectively.
Several members of the Maximus talent acquisition team were also present to support computer science students eager to apply their knowledge to real-world solutions.
“It’s beneficial for our students to speak directly with recruiters and hear what they’re looking for,” Shumba said. “With the current shifts in hiring across the field, it’s important to reinforce that meaningful opportunities still exist. We’re here to help students better prepare to target them.”
The lively AI demonstration by Maximus professionals brought the emerging technology to life for students and faculty. Presenters showcased practical uses for AI in data analysis and decision-making, emphasizing how to utilize these tools while maintaining a human-centered perspective. They also noted that while AI may automate some business and government functions, it will not replace the need for human oversight.
Kimberly Allagnon, a junior computer science major, expressed appreciation for exposure to AI in everyday workplace scenarios.
“I think it’s great that Bowie State is preparing us for the world of AI instead of shielding us from it. Listening to people who are currently in roles that use AI and discovering how they adapt to it helps me and my classmates advance our careers. I’ve learned a lot already, and I’m grateful for the opportunity.”
Through the Department of Computer Science, Bowie State continues to support students on their path to being at the cutting edge of technology and evolving into future leaders. This commitment ensures that students receive an education that prepares them to become innovative, creative and positioned for high-demand careers.
