Future Bulldogs and Families Arrive at BSU to Step Confidently into their College Journey

Future Bulldogs and Families Arrive at BSU to Step Confidently into their College Journey

Three hundred future Bulldogs filled the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center on March 28 for Admitted Students Day, an energetic welcome event hosted by the Division of Enrollment Management & Student Affairs. The event offered a preview of what awaits the incoming class.

BSU faculty, staff and current students led forums and activities to engage incoming freshmen, transfers and their families as they prepare to start their college journey.

“From the electrifying sounds of the Symphony of Soul Band to a captivating performance by the Golden Girls cheerleaders to heartfelt words from student leaders, the atmosphere was energized and filled with Bulldog pride,” said Erica Johnson, strategic coordinator for Enrollment Management & Student Affairs.

One of the day’s biggest highlights was the announcement of scholarships awarded to more than 1,000 students. Dr. Karmalita Contee, director of private scholarships and grants, announced that more than 1,700 admitted students for fall 2026 were offered a one-time non-renewable scholarship, ranging in value from $1,000 to $2,000 based on a GPA range of 3.0 and 4.0+. The auditorium erupted in celebration as students and families applauded the news. The awards were made possible in large part through contributions by Mackenzie Scott and the BSU Bold campaign

New students toured campus, asked questions of faculty and connected with resources to help smooth the transition process for the upcoming academic year. Representatives from several student organizations and groups shared their personal experiences and offered their perspectives on campus life. Members of the Student Government Association, Royal Court and Greek-Letter organizations answered questions on what to expect and shared tips on staying centered.

Parents and family members attended breakout sessions that addressed administrative processes, financial aid and housing resources. BSU faculty and staff recognized that this milestone impacts entire families, not just students.

Reflecting on the upbeat, informative event, Keesha Atkins, assistant director of enrollment communications said she felt the energy of the new students.

“It was great to see new Bulldogs and their parents get excited about starting their college journey. Sessions were designed to get students and families ready for life at BSU and they took the opportunity to learn and ask good questions about the enrollment process, financial aid and campus life.”

Bowie State University continues to shine as Maryland’s oldest HBCU, empowering future leaders and entrepreneurs to boldly take on the world. Faculty and staff remain committed to providing innovative programs and transformational experiences to shape Bulldogs into lifelong learners who are civically and globally minded.
