#2 Maryland Overpowers Bowie State 93-62

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The #2 Maryland Terrapins had no trouble handing Bowie State University a 93-62 setback on Tuesday evening in the Xfinity Center.

“Their size and our early foul trouble were key factors tonight” said Bowie State head coach Darrell Brooks. When asked what impressed him about the Terrapins, Brooks said, “Their consistency … They play the same way and that is what championship teams do.”

Bowie State (13-10) was led by senior Miles Jackson (Silver Spring, Md.) with 13 points and six rebounds, both team-highs while sophomore Dayshawn Wells (Baltimore, Md.) added a personal season-high 12 points.

As a team, Bowie State shot 37.1 percent (23-of-62) from the floor, which included 5-of-18 3-pointers and 11-of-16 (68.8 percent) at the free throw line.

Leading the attack for Maryland (22-3) was Rasheed Sulaimon (Houston, Texas) with a game-high 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field. Diamond Stone (Milwaukee, Wisc.) and Michal Cekovsky (Konsice, Slovakia) added 14 points apiece while Jaylen Brantley (Springfield, Mass.) contributed 10 points.

The much taller Terps dominated inside, accounting for 48 points in the paint and out-rebounded the Bulldogs 39-27. Robert Carter, Jr. (Thomasville, Ga.) pulled down a game-high seven rebounds in the win.

Maryland scored six of their first eight points on layups and the Terps were in the one-and-one by the 15:11 mark of the first half. The Terps pushed its lead to 21-7 by the second media timeout and held a 54.5 percent to 20 percent shooting percentage over Bowie State.

The Terps went into halftime with a comfortable 47-29 cushion on 13-of-24 field goals (54.2 percent) and 19-of-24 free throws (79.2 percent).

Bowie State hit 11-of-34 first half field goals (32.4 percent) and 4-of-7 at the free throw line and were whistled for 18 fouls in the first 20 minutes.

The start of the second half pretty much mirrored the first half with the Bulldogs turning the ball over and Maryland parading to the free throw line. The Terps began the second half with a 16-6 run to push their lead to 63-35 by the 14:47 mark substituted freely for the rest of the game.

The Bulldogs will return to action in less than 24 hours, hosting the Panthers of Virginia Union University at 7:30 p.m. in Bowie State’s A.C. Jordan Arena.
