Curriculum Overview
Bowie State University Building Online Learning Disciplines Parent Initiative (BSU BOLD) is designed to support families as you deal with the ebbs and flows associated with the dual pandemics of COVID-19 and Racial/Social Injustice. BSU BOLD is coordinated by School Psychologists and Human Development professionals. Our team also includes the support of Licensed Professional Counselors and community organizations. We are a virtual program that is offered at no charge to families who reside or attend school in the state of Maryland. Without a doubt, the dual pandemics have been challenging, but they have also provided opportunities for us to strengthen ourselves and build supportive communities.
Focus Area 1: Mediated Learning Experience
The Mediated Learning Experience (MLE) is the process of adults helping children attach meaning to the objects and events around them. We will help children make sense of the world through exhilarating discussions of events that take place in their lives.
MLE encourages students to think about phenomenon or events in particular ways such as attaching labels, recognizing underlying principles, and drawing certain conclusions from events.
The Mediated Learning Experience...
- Describes a special quality of interaction between a learner and a person, whom we call a mediator.
- Changes the learning environment from unilateral to reciprocal.
- Creates opportunity for the mediator to select, change, amplify and interpret both the stimuli that come to the learner and the learner’s responses
Focus Area 2: Social Emotional Learning
Social Emotional Learning (SEL) helps kids work on coping mechanisms and goal setting. It also helps with interpersonal skills like working in groups and resolving minor and large conflicts. SEL can help kids who learn and think differently discuss their challenges and their successes, and build self-esteem and self-confidence.
