Advance your Career with an Upper Division Certificate in ESOL

The Upper Division Certificate in ESOL at Bowie State University is the first curriculum of its kind at a Maryland HBCU. This online synchronous certificate is designed to strengthen your ability to teach students who are learning English as a second language and prepare you for the ESOL Praxis® test.

Through this certificate, you'll explore instructional approaches and language acquisition theories, examine the roles of teachers and students, and apply proven classroom techniques to lesson plans. You'll learn core strategies to help students develop English language skills in phonics, grammar, vocabulary and comprehension. You'll also learn to design curricula that integrate reading, writing, listening and speaking skills to help students connect their new English language skills to other areas of interest.

The Upper Division Certificate in ESOL also prepares you to address the cultural and linguistic needs of students from diverse language, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds while applying state and federal policies that shape the educational rights of English speakers in Maryland.

Why an Upper Division Certificate in ESOL at Bowie State University?

As Maryland’s oldest HBCU, Bowie State University is committed to addressing the critical need for more highly qualified teachers who reflect the diversity of Maryland classrooms. The Upper Division Certificate in ESOL supports this mission by preparing you to become an educator grounded in your discipline and responsive to the ethnic and cultural backgrounds of the students you serve.

The curriculum is rooted in a culturally responsive framework that emphasizes understanding and respect for the diverse cultural backgrounds and experiences of the students you teach. This approach is forward-thinking, socially conscious and professionally rigorous, and it prepares you to meet the needs of multicultural classrooms.

Currently, there are no HBCUs in Maryland that offer an ESOL certificate at the undergraduate level. This Upper Division Certificate in ESOL is fully online and offers the flexibility to pursue your educational goals while balancing the other demands of your life.

To earn your Upper Division Certificate in ESOL, you will complete 15 semester hours of credit that consist of five, 3-credit-hour courses. The courses are offered through an online format with weekly Zoom class sessions that meet in the evenings.

After completing the certificate, you’ll have access to a workshop to help you prepare for the ESOL Praxis® test.

The certificate is designed to be completed alongside your major, with all ESOL certificate requirements fulfilled in addition to your degree requirements.

Please Note: If you are seeking ESOL endorsement in the State of Maryland, you must hold a valid teaching license.
