International Human Rights: Munich, Germany

Study contemporary human rights in a city that prioritized its importance. This eight-day course, offered in partnership with Southern Illinois University-Carbondale School of Social Work, examines the economic and social work framework from a European perspective. Experience firsthand how human rights issues uniquely affect life in this culture and how they are shaped, challenged and resolved by its citizens. Explore the context of human rights from a social perspective. Broaden your study of social science in a historic part of the world. Participate in citywide field visits to expand learning from a new perspective.

Travel dates: January 4-12, 2017

Transportation: Each student will be responsible for making flight arrangements to and from Munich, Germany. Tickets can range between $800.00-1500.00 round trip depending on carrier and other factors. Most travel within Germany is covered by the program fee. Unplanned outside excursions during free time are not covered.

Estimated Cost: the program fee is $1600.00 (plus a nonrefundable $50 application fee). The program fee includes all necessary transportation relating to the course within Germany, accommodation, and some meals.

Program:

  • Students will visit a former concentration camp outside Munich.
  • Other field visits focus on HIV/AIDS, homelessness, community mental health, refugees, and elder care.
