Services

All TRiO/SSS students with 59 credits or less receive academic advising from TRiO counseling staff. Working in partnership with academic departments, students are assisted in the selection of courses, identification of programs of study, and review of life and career goals. Upon earning 60 credits, students are advised in their respective academic departments until graduation.

Counselors also provide career advice and counseling and coordinate mentoring and internship partnerships between TRiO students and members of the academic and professional communities.

TRIO-SSS provides Math and STEM related tutoring and support to program participants, by engaging participants in individualized structured tutoring sessions to address specific concerns and individual difficulties with such subject areas.

Student Outcomes
TRIO-SSS program participants enrolled in math and science-based tutoring demonstrates a significant correlation between the number of tutoring sessions attended and grades attained, as students with frequent tutoring sessions earn high pass grades.  Data proves that repeated math tutoring sessions increases student success rate. Additionally, our program services ensure successful testing outcomes for program participants.

Challenges that Students Overcome
Some of the notable challenges, we have overtime helped students overcome includes math testing anxiety, as well as providing a learning bridge to help students understand the underlying concepts and strategies essentially for internalizing mathematics.

TRIO-SSS helps to facilitate the cultivation of students’ voices as writers both inside and outside of the classroom. We achieve this end through one-on-one writing consultations, language arts workshops, and by maintaining a low stakes learning environment.

Writing? Reading? Giving a presentation? One of the advantages TRIO students have is FREE access to writing and communication skills support for not only English classes, but also for other classes and projects. 

Program Participants benefit from:

• Tutoring in areas ranging from basic grammar to structuring an argument
• Writing a script, or getting published
• Students in English 100, Reading 100, English 101, and English 102 are provided one-on-one support

TRIO-SSS helps students locate internships and employment opportunities on and off campus. We provide community service and service-learning opportunities for students to become socially responsible participants.  Also, we serve as a liaison with social challenges that impede a student’s success. Students receive individualized support and consultation.
