Spring Semester Transition, Commencement and Planning for Fall

February 24, 2021

In spite of the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, Bowie State University residential students have reported an overall positive on-campus experience, and many have requested to extend their stay on campus until the end of the semester. The university’s original spring semester plan calls for students in traditional residence halls to move out at spring break and continue all classes virtually.

In response to the expression of interest from more than 150 students and discussions with student government leaders, the university agreed to provide accommodations to those students interested in the opportunity for extended stay. Any student requesting to remain on campus must submit the application to extend your housing contract to the Office of Residence Life and pay the additional cost by March 10, in advance of the scheduled move-out date of March 13. No additional financial aid is available to cover the cost for extended housing and meal plans.

Commencement

On Friday, May 21, we will celebrate the achievements of our newest BSU graduates with the Spring Commencement ceremony. The commencement committee is exploring additions to the celebration to enhance engagement of students, families and the entire BSU community within the parameters of COVID-19 limitations. Details will be forthcoming.

Fall Semester Planning

As the university and shared governance leadership teams consider decisions for fall semester operations, they are seeking input on the experiences and perspectives of members of the campus community. A survey, to be deployed this week, will gather input from students, faculty and staff to help inform the important decisions ahead as we build on lessons learned over the past year. It should take about five minutes to complete the survey, which includes specific questions for each constituent group. Everyone is encouraged to respond quickly so that plans for the fall can be finalized.

The progress of widespread vaccination will significantly affect how quickly the state and nation can return to more normal operations. Persons working at higher education institutions are now eligible to receive the vaccine under Maryland’s Phase 1B and 1C distribution plan. Faculty and staff are encouraged to seek an appointment as soon as possible to protect yourselves and the campus community. Maryland residents can check the state vaccine locator webpage to find a vaccine site in your area and follow instructions to register. The Prince George’s County Health Department also offers appointments for people who work in the county.

We ask all members of the campus community to continue to monitor emails and the BSU COVID-19 Updates web section for the latest information. Any questions or concerns should be emailed to covid19@bowiestate.edu.
