BSU Response to Twitter Communication About Sexual Assault

The university recently became aware of Twitter pages where students from a variety of local universities are sharing their experiences of sexual assault, coercion and other forms of sexual misconduct. As a reminder, Bowie State University prohibits all forms of sexual misconduct. We are concerned about the physical, mental and emotional well-being of all students, especially during this time, and we recognize the sensitive nature of sexual misconduct. Therefore, we encourage our students to be careful of using social media posts to discuss these personal experiences, and in particular, to identify yourself or other students.

The Office of Equity Compliance remains available during COVID-19 to assist you in deciding how to move forward after experiencing any form of sexual misconduct. If you or someone you know have experienced any form of sexual misconduct, contact Jasmyn Lucas, Title IX Coordinator at TitleIXCoordinator@bowiestate.edu. Students also have the option of reporting anonymously online.

Please know that we are here to provide you with supportive resources even if you do not want an investigation. We are available to answer any questions you have about our process and your rights, which all students who are parties to an investigation share equally. The university strictly prohibits retaliation for participation in the investigation process.

The university provides free, confidential counseling services for students who are interested in discussing their experience with someone who is not obligated to share reporting with the Office of Equity Compliance. If you would like to speak with counseling services, please contact them at counselingservices@bowiestate.edu or via phone at 301-860-4164.

We hope that everyone stays safe during this time.
