COVID-19 Update: Staying the Course through the Pandemic

I’d first like to extend my deepest appreciation for the hard work and commitment that the Bowie State University employees, especially our essential staff, have demonstrated during this extended period of altered work environments brought on by the COVID-19 crisis. I commend you for the adjustments you have made to assure that the critical work of the university continues.

From the daily updates from Governor Hogan, we know that the coronavirus is still very active and continuing to spread in communities throughout the state. We must all continue to be vigilant in following guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to mitigate spreading the disease in our campus community. Our efforts to observe the guidelines not only protect our individual health, but also that of our colleagues and family members.

As a reminder, below are the key things for all employees to remember if you are working on campus:

  • Wear masks in places where you are in proximity to other people
  • Practice social distancing to remain at least 6 feet from other people
  • Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds throughout the day
  • Use hand sanitizer when water is not available

The university has provided masks in the units where essential employees are working on campus. Gloves are also available, if needed. Any non-essential employees who come to campus for any for any reason should wear a mask. Our maintenance staff is continually sanitizing high-traffic surfaces throughout the campus.

The university also continues to support the needs of those students remaining in the residence halls. The Nutrition Lounge is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.  Other food pantry resources are also available across the state.

New COVID-19 Positive Reports

We are continuing to receive reports of members of the BSU campus community who have contracted the disease. This week we have learned of three additional persons who were confirmed with positive COVID-19 tests. We extend our best wishes for a speedy recovery and well-being to each of them and their families.

Please remember to regularly check the Coronavirus Updates webpage to keep abreast of the latest messages about campus operations. If you have questions about the university’s COVID-19 response, please email covid19@bowiestate.edu. Any questions related to academic matters should be emailed to covid19academics@bowiestate.edu.
