Highlights in Athletics

The Bowie State University Bulldogs earned many accolades in the 2019-20 season that was shortened in mid-March 2020 when the Central Intercollegiate Athletics Association (CIAA) cancelled athletics due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Here are a few of the highlights:

Repeat Champions Make History

The Bulldogs football team brought home the CIAA title for the second time in history and for the second straight year in 2019, defeating the Fayetteville State Broncos. The Bulldogs entered the championship game with great momentum, going undefeated during the regular season for the first-time ever. After securing the CIAA title and a berth into the NCAA Division II playoffs for the third straight season, the Bulldogs hosted the Carson-Newman University Eagles in the first-round playoff game. They eventually fell to Carson-Newman, but the team boldly led the Bulldog Nation into a history-making season.

“Our guys did an outstanding job this year handling adversity and staying focused on winning each day at practice. This is great for the university and the Bowie community," said head football coach Damon Wilson.

Nationally Ranked Team

Despite ending their post-season early due to the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown, the nationally ranked Bulldogs women’s basketball team had an impressive regular season. When the Bulldogs entered the CIAA Tournament, they ranked 25th in the D2SIDA National Poll. The team fell to Fayetteville State in the championship game, but was select the No. 4 seed in the Atlantic Region for the NCAA Division II Championships. It would have been the team’s third consecutive appearance in the D-II championships.

The Bulldogs finished their season with a 25-5 overall record, and Kyaja Williams was named to D-II Conference Commissioner’s Association All-Atlantic Region Women’s Basketball Second Team.
