The following highlights recognize outstanding faculty for their innovative teaching practices:

 

Honors for Teaching Excellence

Horacio Sierra

Dr. Horacio Sierra infuses innovative teaching methods in the classroom.

Associate Professor Horacio Sierra, a literature and cultural studies professor who uses experiential learning to promote student success, received a Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching by the University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents, the highest honor for USM faculty. He uses out-of-the-box teaching methods and promotes the use of technology and creative expression to assess student learning. He regularly engages students with field trips to live performances and art exhibitions, as well as guest lectures from state legislators, pop culture icons and civil rights activists.

“Dr. Sierra has a guiding belief in the importance of immersing students in extracurricular activities to enable them to gain rich cultural experiences that widen their mental horizon,” said BSU President Aminta H. Breaux.

Inclusion Research Celebrated

Gina Lewis

Associate Professor Gina Lewis receives honors for her leadership in social justice art.

Associate Professor Gina Lewis, a visual artist who uses creative expression to inspire social justice action, was named an Inclusion Imperative Visiting Faculty Fellow with University of Maryland Baltimore County’s Dresher Center for the Humanities. Professor Lewis is co-leading an interdisciplinary team of student and faculty researchers to uncover lost stories of historic African American communities who lived and worked along the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park. Through the fellowship, she advanced her research in residence at the Dresher Center for full academic year, receiving support in a robust humanities environment and a stipend.

“The arts and humanities provide the means for confronting, contemplating and communicating the nature of our similarities and the beauty of our differences,” she said.
