Earth Week

Earth Day 2023 is Saturday, April 22.  BSU will celebrate the days leading up to, and following Earth Day with a series of events coordinated by C4, our BSU Student Green Ambassadors, and our partner - Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay. This year’s Earth Day theme is ‘Invest in Our Planet’.

Prince George’s County Public Schools Student Environmental Alliance Summit (PGCPS-SES)

  • April 18, 2023 | 9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
  • Student Center Ballroom
  • No registration required

The Summit exposes PGCPS high school students to career options, leadership and advocacy activities, and contemporary environmental research.  Part 2 of the summit contains action projects, speaker, and a fun day for the students to explore opportunities at BSU and on our campus. if you would like to serve as a BSU volunteer, please contact Jabari Walker at jswalker@bowiestate.edu

 Arbor Day Tree Planting

  • Thursday, April 20 | 11am-12:30pm
  • Area behind Haley Hall near tennis and basketball courts

Help us plant two trees on campus!  In honor of Arbor Day and our new ‘Tree Designated Campus’ recognition, BSU community volunteers will plant two trees in the Peace Park area of campus which is in the beginning phase of getting restored.  Following the planting will be a block party.

Earth Day Block Party Celebration

FREE FOOD TRUCK (Vegetarian Soulfood)!  Music! Games!  Plant your own seeds!  Immediately following the tree planting, participants are encouraged to turn off all electronic devices for a few hours and come celebrate Earth's natural environment.  Indulge in free entrée samples and a chance to  'plant your own seeds' and take with you!

 Movie Night:  Apple TV ‘Extrapolations’ Series Screening

  • Tuesday, April 25 | 6pm-8pm
  • Ballroom B&C, Student Center

Apple TV teams up with C4 & BSU Green Ambassadors to expose community members to a new sci-fi series that tries to explore the consequences of climate change on human society and relationships.  The first two episodes will be broadcast on a movie-style screen on campus.  FREE FOOD and drinks are provided!

 

 

 

 

 

 Wetland Restoration Site Visit

  • Wednesday, April 26 | 3:30-5:30pm

Attendees will travel to Upper Marlboro area and learn about wetland restoration and adaptive management techniques.  The group will hear about the history and mission of the area, discuss the design & implementation process of a mitigation project, the maintenance, monitoring, and the challenges involved.  Free Transportation provided from campus.  Registration is required.

 BSU Native Plant Walk

  • Thursday, April 27 | 3:00-4:30pm

Learn about and explore the area's native plants right near our campus!  The first part will be discussion led by an expert in the field, followed by a walk to the nearby BSU trails to put discussion into practice!

 Campus & Hiking Trip to Shenandoah National Park

  • April 29-30 (overnight)

Sponsored by the BSU Outdoors Club.  The BSU-OC is organizing an overnight weekend (April 29-30) camping and hiking trip to Shenandoah National Park with the objective of learning about camping and national parks. The group will depart at 9 am on the 29th and return by 6 pm on the 30th. This is open to ALL BSU students.

There will be a tent-setup practice run on the April 26 or 27 at 3 or 4pm on campus.
