BSU Crowd Get its Laugh On at Throw Back Comedy Show

The event could have been more aptly titled Throwback Concert with Comedic Opener.  Bowie State’s website suggested that the show began at 7 p.m., it started after 8.  

Anyone who tried to procure a ticket Tuesday or Wednesday were turned away from the “sold out” show. This is hard to believe considering there were more than 50 vacant seats--either there was an unannounced cap on free tickets or about one sixth of students with tickets decided to not attend.  

Thank god for DJ HD.  The host had little to say outside of claiming the show would be “full of surprises”.  The only surprise was a long wait between performers (at least half of an hour between Rob Base and Doug E. Fresh).

That being said… Lawrence Owens was introduced as a “smart comedian with his own brand of comedy”, Owens used his time to rile-up and divide the crowd, encouraging young women to be “whores” not “hoes”.  His act consisted of much more crowd work than written jokes.  Some enjoyed his act while others were visibly uncomfortable.  

Next to the stage was Rob Base, he put on a good show that peaked with “It Takes Two.”  A fun performance with classic tunes.

Capping off the night was Doug E. Fresh.  Not only did he have the entire audience on their feet, he made it a party, inviting students to join him on stage to show off their dance moves.   He performed his throwback hit “The Show” to great acclaim.  “The Human Beat Box”, dropped a beat for 60 bars to the amazement of the entire room! Now 49 years old he remains fresh.  

He ended the show on an encouraging note, claiming “I only beatbox sober.”
