CD PROJEKT RED, developers of popular game Cyberpunk 2077, was cyberattacked by unknown hackers last spring at their headquarters in Warsaw, Poland. “The Polish studio said hackers had managed to access its internal network, collected certain data and left a ransom note threatening to release the source code of its games,” nbcnews.com reported.
CD PROJEKT RED informed users of their games and ex-employees by posting a brief message on their Twitter account of the cyberattack that included a ransom. Currently, it is unknown what the attackers want but, according to their message that the developers released on Twitter, “Your source codes will be sold or leaked online and your documents will be sent to our contacts and gaming journalism.”
The game developers of Cyberpunk are consistently running into problems, from the game receiving low reviews due to glitches to their stock prices going down. “It’s been a tough few months for CD PROJEKT RED,” nbcnews.com reported. “The company was hit with a deluge of complaints from gamers upon the release of its highly-anticipated Cyberpunk game due to numerous bugs and poor performance on older consoles.”
Although this cyberattacked happened so suddenly, CD PROJEKT RED stated on Twitter, “We will not give in to the demands nor negotiate with the actor, being aware that this may eventually lead to the release of the compromised data.”
Asked what he thought about the attack, an XBOX ONE player, who identified himself only as Adam M., said “to be honest, it’s pretty sad, and no one should go through that. However, it’s also pretty funny in a way because the game is glitchy and it has all these problems. I think this a warning to the developers to upgrade their security.”
CD PROJEKT RED are currently investigating the attack.
