Today, make up has become a part the daily routines of many people across the world and has become accessible goods that are widely demanded by the society. Currently, makeup is viewed by many as a work of art, and even though there can be risks when using makeup, there can also be significant benefits. Whether good or bad, makeup has made its way into everyday life and is having a major influence on it.

Through the effect of media, the use of cosmetics becomes more admired and so does the beauty standards that have been set according to what society thinks is beautiful. While makeup can affect people in positive ways like the rest of society such as building confidence and promoting self-expression. “I think makeup allows people to be their own person. When it comes to makeup hurting or helping people, I think it could go both ways. I do not think makeup is “good for people’s skin,” it is for any and everyone.” said Dominic Jackson, who is a dance major and a freelance makeup artist.

Along with the currently booming makeup industry comes many benefits of purchasing and using these products. Wearing makeup can build one’s confidence, self-esteem, and can also make a person look more presentable and give off the impression of self-care according to www.ghspress.com.

With the common message in society to “be yourself,” people can use the different colors, shades, and styles of makeup to create a look that is unique to them and full of self expression. Lunden Turner, junior, says, “I love makeup. It is a way to express yourself on your face. The use of cosmetics also opens the door for creativity and originality. It makes me look better and gives me the self confidence that allows me to do the things that I have not before. I think that in the past people didn’t like makeup as much because it made them seem fake, but today people realize that they don’t need makeup, but that it is a form of art.”

The media play excessively big roles in the cosmetic industry and how it can affect the self-esteem of young women. According to www.vogue.com, 80 percent of women said that the images of women in the media make them feel insecure and forty percent of women who said they would consider cosmetic surgery in the future. The statistics clearly shows how dangerous the effect of distorted belief of beauty in the media caused negative implementation towards self-love and well-being.

Despite some of the negativity and stereotypes of makeup and those who wear it have faced, it is much more accepted and appreciated. Although it has changed in many ways from the past, some of its primary uses are still beauty and self-care.
