Why a Doctor of Science in Computer Science at Bowie State?

Bowie State University is the only HBCU to offer a doctoral degree in computer science–and our Afrocentric approach sets us apart from any other program in the country.  As Maryland’s first HBCU, your experience is grounded in culturally relevant and socially conscious computing education and research.  

We are located between Baltimore and Washington D.C., which gives you access to many federal agencies, research institutions and technological companies. The university has established partnerships with many local organizations, making it easy for you to leverage those relationships into career opportunities. You can also develop close relationships with our diverse faculty to gain opportunities within their networks. 

You must complete 72 credit hours for the Doctor of Science in computer science program. If you’ve completed a master's in computer science, you can transfer up to 6 credits to the Ph.D. program.  

Credit hours consist of core courses, elective credits and dissertation hours. Electives are further broken down into four knowledge areas. See catalog for complete breakdown of courses.

Build Your Career Skills   

Groups like the Women in Computer Science Club and Graduate Student Association connect you to students, faculty and professionals for career development and networking. In addition, the Graduate Writing Center will help you hone your critical skill in writing for tasks such as class assignments, seminar papers, research publications and dissertations. 

Handshake

After enrolling, take advantage of Bowie State's many opportunities and get familiar with Handshake. Handshake is an online database for Bowie State students that allows thousands of employers to post internships and job openings. Use this tool to secure an internship while you study or to jump-start your career after you graduate.

Some faculty members may have opportunities for you to work on grant funded research projects. Program coordinators keep a running list of funded faculty members, so contact them for more information. You must be a current student to inquire.  

Graduate Resources

We’ve compiled a list of resources to help you navigate your graduate studies and get the most out of your educational experience. Make an appointment to receive writing assistance, reserve a private study space or contact Disability Support Services for additional accommodations.   

Graduate Assistantships

You can apply for a limited number of graduate assistantships and receive a monthly stipend and a tuition waiver for 9 credit hours a semester. You will work 20 hours a week as a researcher, teacher, or administrative assistant.  

To qualify, be a full-time graduate/doctoral student with at least 9 completed credits and a GPA of 3.5 or higher.  

Deadlines:  

  • Spring Appointments: Second Friday of November 
  • Fall Appointments: Last Friday in March
