Cohort 1 (2025)

Every program has a first group of students who take a chance on something new. For ExLENT, that group is Cohort 1.

These Bowie State scholars were the first to train in AI, data, and security through the program, learn alongside graduate, faculty, and industry mentors, and carry that preparation into paid summer internships with industry partners. Along the way, they helped shape what ExLENT looks like for every cohort that follows.

Meet the scholars

Mohamed
Mohamed Alie Kargbo is a sophomore Computer Science major at Bowie State University and an ExLENT Scholar in the NSF ExLENT Program. With a dedicated focus in cybersecurity and a strong passion for AI development, he firmly believes that artificial intelligence will redefine how the world approaches digital security. As an Army ROTC cadet, Mohamed has cultivated essential leadership, critical thinking, and decision-making under pressure skills that directly strengthen his approach to technical problem solving. He continuously sharpens his abilities through hands-on experience in cryptographic systems, data structures, algorithms, and software development. Mohamed’s career goal is to work at the intersection of cybersecurity and AI, leveraging intelligent systems to build stronger and more adaptive defenses, while continuing to expand his experience in software development and grow as both a technologist and a leader.

Naomi
Naomi Onuosa is a current Bowie State student and an active ExLent member. She prides herself on her determination and her commitment to her education. With a strong academic record, she graduated from Largo High School with a 4.0 GPA, completed internships, and earned a scholarship to attend Prince George’s Community College, where she obtained her associate's degree in information technology. She is currently pursuing a degree in computer science and is dedicated to her professional growth in the ever-growing field of technology.

Abdoul
Abdoul Maalick Diallo is a Computer Science student at Bowie State University with a strong focus on cybersecurity and machine learning. I have participated in two Summer Undergraduate Research Institute (SURI) projects, where I conducted research in cyber threat intelligence and AI security. In these projects, I applied machine learning models such as XGBoost, Random Forest, and SVM to analyze and classify cybersecurity threats, and explored techniques for detecting malicious or poisoned code.In addition, I gained hands-on experience as a Data Science Intern at HCD International, where I used Python and libraries such as Pandas and scikit-learn to analyze and work with real-world datasets. I am passionate about leveraging artificial intelligence to strengthen cybersecurity systems and aspire to develop intelligent solutions that can detect and prevent cyber threats in real time.

Keny
Keny Nana is a sophomore from Washington, DC, pursuing a degree in Computer Science. My passion for technology comes from the endless possibilities within devices, the unexplored world of virtual reality, and cybersecurity, which sparked my interest at an early age since I was coding on Roblox. I am seeking a summer internship to apply my growing skills in AI and continue developing as a future innovator in the field.
