Earn your Degree at Bowie State University

The Bachelor of Science in Immersive Media, Entertainment, and Gaming, or IMEG, puts you at the forefront of game design and virtual entertainment. 

You will gain hands-on experience in immersive media, virtual production, animation, visual and special effects and cinematic storytelling. The program emphasizes iterative cycles of creative design, entrepreneurship, problem-solving and critical analysis so you can grow as both a technical expert and a creative thinker.  

The IMEG program is an interdisciplinary partnership between the Department of Fine and Performing Arts and the Department of Computer Science. This collaboration gives you the opportunity to work across disciplines, engaging in fields such as game design, extended reality, virtual production, and multimodal sensory integration while mastering the visual and media arts.  

Once you complete the program, you’ll be prepared for technical and creative roles in the game, film and entertainment industries. You’ll also be ready to launch your career in game development, immersive arts, film and virtual production, interactive design simulation, and beyond.

Why a Bachelor of Science in IMEG at Bowie State University?

Bowie State University is among the few HBCUs offering courses in animation, cinematography and digital media arts. The IMEG program emphasizes entrepreneurship, innovation and creativity through cross-departmental and industry collaborations. It also prepares you to explore the socioeconomic, political, and cultural dimensions of emerging augmented, cinematic and mixed-reality experiences.

To earn a Bachelor of Science in IMEG from Bowie State University, you must complete a minimum of 121 credits.  

The IMEG degree program is divided into three primary requirements: general education, core courses and additional requirements. These are the program requirements:

General Education: 47/48 credits

IMEG Core Courses: 72 credits

  • Gaming: 21 credits
  • Animation, Design, Production, Immersive Media: 40 credits
  • VCDMA, Studio Art/Design, Entrepreneurship, Supporting: 15 credits

The Department of Fine and Performing Arts has secured various university partnerships that facilitate access to exclusive internship and career opportunities. You can proactively leverage formal relationships with Laika Studios, Megamind Media, Octet Productions, Adobe, Prince George's Arts and Humanities Council, HBCU in LA, PG Film Office, PG Film Festival and many more organizations in the pipeline that create unique opportunities for Bowie State students.

Bowie State University is an Adobe Creative Campus with resources such as state-of-the-art video editing, animation, VFX/SFX, motion capture and VR storytelling — all powered by Adobe. In 2024, the university launched the MOCAVI-XR Studio, located in the Fine and Performing Arts Center, which promotes cross-disciplinary collaboration and innovation for IMEG students.

Career Outlook   

Immersive media, entertainment, and gaming are rapidly growing fields with diverse career opportunities. You can pursue roles such as game designer, software developer, programmer, art director, creative director, special effects animator, digital visual artist or play tester.  

Through the IMEG program, you will also gain the skills to integrate computing, modeling, simulation, and digital media arts into animation, film and video, sound, and virtual production. These skills prepare you for careers in entertainment and filmmaking, immersive and interactive experiences, research and education, military and workforce training, as well as advertising, sports, and live events.

Scholarships

Once you enroll at Bowie State University, you will automatically receive a list of scholarships you qualify for, based on the SAT/ACT scores and GPA provided on your admission application.
