The Bowie State University Maguire Academy of Insurance and Risk Management leads the development of a robust program in insurance and risk management education. The program prepares students of all majors to enter a fast-growing career field. The academy hosts symposiums with industry leaders and networking opportunities that allow students to build relationships with professionals that can lead to internships, mentorships, job prospects and careers.

Education
The Maguire Academy for Insurance & Risk Management, housed in the College of Business, coordinates with faculty to develop and deliver courses and other educational programs on identifying, assessing and controlling financial, legal, strategic and security risks affecting organizations of all types.
The academy also works to create an interdisciplinary ecosystem that integrates an understanding of the principles of insurance & risk management into instruction across disciplines, including economics, finance, management, data analytics and information technology.
Partnerships
The Maguire Academy partners with leading companies and associations in the risk management and insurance industry and builds relationships that support its developmental goals. Through these connections, highly skilled individuals have been recruited to the academy’s board of advisors, to be featured speakers at symposiums and workshops, guide development of the academy and to connect Bowie State University students to internships and jobs.
Student Engagement
In addition to career opportunities, the Maguire Academy focuses on helping students develop the foundation for the principles of risk management and insurance, estimated to be a $29 Billion industry in the next 3 years. RMI will cover every aspect of risk and insurance, and a comprehensive knowledge of assessing risk is a valuable life skill for students across all majors.
Professional Network
Bowie State University will serve as a creative center where professionals can connect and discuss new developments concerning risk management and insurance and better advise policymakers to mitigate risk at all levels. Through connections with industry leaders, Bowie State Students will be able to learn why RMI is the hidden jewel of professional industries.
Maguire Academy Leadership
William L. Roberts is the Executive Director of the Maguire Academy for Insurance & Risk Management at Bowie State University. He joined the university in 2023, to establish the Academy of Insurance & Risk Management, and create a curriculum for a Bachelor of Science degree in Insurance & Risk Management.
Before arriving at Bowie State University, Roberts worked at American Water Works Company, where he managed strategically placed professionals who covered property, auto, casualty, workers’ compensation, and employment claims and litigation on a national level. He has served as managing director at Risk & Claims Management Consulting and provided expert solutions for public, private and non-profit organizations.
Roberts was also Assistant Vice President and Director of Corporate Risk Management for Lincoln Financial Group in Radnor, Pennsylvania, from 2001 to 2013. He procured over 30 insurance programs annually, including Lloyds and Bermudian Insurers, and worked at Pep Boys for over six years, managing risks and claims for 650 stores, 25,000 employees and 2,000 fleet vehicles.
Roberts has selected a board of advisors to support the academy and continues introducing more students to a new and exciting career path.

New Insurance & Risk Management Course
The ARMI 225 "Principles of Risk Management & Insurance" course provides a comprehensive overview of all aspects of risk management and insurance. It explores the various decisions risk managers are faced with, and what type of insurance solutions are available and what they cover. There are 2 real-world projects that are being explored. The course is open to all students, has no prerequisites and can be taken as a general elective.
