Corporate Donor Makes a Significant Investment

When several Bowie State University football players went to work for Gentle Giant Moving Company, an award-winning national moving and storage company, they were looking to earn extra money over the summer and stay in shape with the heavy lifting. They ended up getting a lot more.

The students’ dedicated hard work and commitment to the company inspired the Gentle Giant managers to invest in the BSU Department of Athletics and its student-athletes. Representatives from Gentle Giant presented a generous donation to Clyde Doughty, vice president for intercollegiate athletics and recreation, at halftime during the 2020 Alumni Takeover basketball game. Contributions from corporations and local businesses support the growing needs of Bowie State athletics and help build a strong foundation for a competitive and winning sports program.

With a lot of hard work, and not to mention a good workout, many of the tasks helped me sharpen my skills that will lead to success in the classroom and on the football field.

“One of the main reasons we proudly support Bowie State is because of the fantastic students who came to work with us,” said Matt Packebusch, regional manager at Gentle Giant, which has three offices in the Metro Washington, DC region. “After my team visited the school, we were blown away by the collaborative atmosphere, the respectful interaction between students and professors, and the all-around inclusive culture.”

Mark Murphy, one of the football players who worked as a Gentle Giant seasonal employee, recalled the great experience. “With a lot of hard work, and not to mention a good workout, many of the tasks helped me sharpen my skills that will lead to success in the classroom and on the football field,” he said.

“We are grateful to have Gentle Giant as one of our corporate sponsors and look forward to a long-lasting partnership with the company,” said Doughty. “Their generous donation will address our infrastructure concerns while also assisting with scholarship support for our gifted student-athletes.”
