Annual Report 2019-2020
Robert Brooks
Alumnus Robert Brooks (standing second from the left of center) says an invitation to join a group connecting generations of male educators inspired him to increase his annual giving.
Why I Give to Bowie State
When Robert Brooks (‘54) graduated from high school, he wasn’t thinking about college. A suggestion by a classmate, “Let’s go to Bowie State Teachers College,” now Bowie State University, changed the trajectory of his life. Brooks credits Bowie State with building a solid foundation for the rest of his life, including a successful 36-year career in education.
Brooks demonstrates what it means to be #BSU4LIFE as a nearly 20-year Annual Fund donor and a loyal supporter of his local Bowie State University National Alumni chapter. His commitment to the university runs deep, and he is always looking for new ways to support his alma mater through his time, talent and treasure.
“I would not be where I am today if it wasn’t for Bowie State University,” he said. “As much as I gained from Bowie State, I should be doing much more to help.”
Invited to attend the Bowie Black Male Educators and Leaders Alliance networking reception in early 2020, Brooks felt a renewed desire to donate once again. At the reception, he was honored with the Living Black History Award for paving the way for future generations of Black male educators or leaders. He has decided to increase his annual giving, so others too “can pursue their passions and reach their goals.”
