2016 AASHE Conference
The 2016 Annual AASHE [Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education] Conference & Expo made home in Baltimore, MD this year from October 9-12 in the Baltimore Convention Center. Bowie State University was a host institution which allowed the privilege of a Welcome Letter from President Burnim, free passes for some of our attendees, a table in the grand Expo Hall, and mentioning in the conference materials.
Mr. Jabari Walker was one of three judges during the conference’s ‘Shark Tank’ like inaugural contest, sponsored by Kimberly Clark Professional, where three finalists out of hundreds of applicants presented their campus sustainability project LIVE for the chance to win $50,000.
Dr. Jacqueline Jackson-Palmer was the dynamic emcee for the Opening Ceremony. Dr. Karl Brockenbrough attended the Leadership Workshop and other opening activities. Esteemed faculty attendees included Dr. William Lawrence, Dr. Alan Anderson, and Ms. Cornelia Brooks. Students Malik Butts, Kashawna Duncan, Scott Fitzgerald, Juneil Goode, and Pearline Muckelvene also attended.
This year's conference theme, Beyond the Campus, explored the dissemination and implementation of sustainability solutions in surrounding communities and the world. The conference provided an opportunity to build relationships with campus administrators, faculty, staff and students that are implementing sustainability practices on their campus every day. The three day conference featured keynote speakers, hundreds of break out sessions, an exhibit hall with various vendors, social networking events, and other learning opportunities. Next year’s conference will be held in San Antonio, Texas.
