Welcome to Cohort 1, the inaugural group of Scholarship for Service scholars in the Bowie State University Computer Science department. This pioneering cohort began their journey in the 2023-2024 academic year, setting the foundation for future generations of government cybersecurity professionals.

Research & Innovation
Cohort 1 scholars work alongside faculty on cutting-edge cybersecurity research projects:
Image Forensics & Deep Learning - Dr. Jie Yan and scholars are developing a user-friendly image forensics tool using deep learning techniques to detect digital manipulation and authenticate visual evidence.
Malware Detection - Dr. Sarker Kamruzzaman and scholars investigate advanced malware detection methods, including transformer-based deep learning approaches to identify and neutralize emerging threats.
Smart Environment Security - Under the mentorship of Anijoy Chakma, scholars focus on scalable machine learning models for smart environments, addressing security challenges in IoT and connected systems.
Professional Development
Our inaugural cohort has participated in paid summer internships with government organizations, providing invaluable hands-on experience. Scholars have also engaged in facility tours of Security Operations Centers, seminars with government cybersecurity leaders, and professional development workshops on clearance processes and federal employment.
Meet Our Scholars
Roxan Rockefeller
Roxan Rockefeller is a junior Computer Science major with a strong interest in cybersecurity. She has engaged in research projects and mentoring activities, demonstrating her dedication to the field. Roxan has an upcoming internship with Eli Lilly, where she will work with patient data using Amazon Web Services and Python. She aspires to make a significant impact in cybersecurity.
Dawn Marshall
Dawn Marshall is a dedicated student with a strong commitment to academic excellence. She graduated from West Potomac High School w and chose Bowie State University, where she is currently a rising junior. Dawn is passionate about sustainability and actively participates in environmental initiatives. She also has a valuable internship with NSA's LASR/LTS program, focusing on cybersecurity. Dawn's goal is to become a cybersecurity analyst and contribute to the field.
Kamal Epps
Kamal Epps is a sophomore Computer Science major with a passion for cybersecurity. He has received academic recognition and has been involved in research projects related to cybersecurity. Kamal's goal is to become a prominent figure in the cybersecurity field and contribute to its growth.
Jared Robinson
Jared Robinson is a junior Computer Science major with a focus on cybersecurity. He has demonstrated exceptional leadership skills and academic excellence. Jared is excited about the opportunity to contribute to cybersecurity through the NSF CyberCorps Scholarship.
Jada Danner
Jada Danner is a dedicated Computer Science major with a focus on cybersecurity. She has achieved academic success, secured internships in the computer industry, and is actively involved in mentoring and dance therapy. Jada's vision and commitment drive her towards a successful career in cybersecurity.
Sage Despeignes
Sage Despeignes is a dedicated and self-motivated scholar with a strong focus on academic performance and a passion for cybersecurity. Her unwavering commitment to personal and professional growth led her from studying Information Technology at Prince George's Community College (PGCC) to pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science at Bowie State University. She is preparing for an IT Cybersecurity Specialist internship with the U.S. Coast Guard C5I Service Center (C5ISC), where she plans to enhance her skills and gain additional experience in Cybersecurity.
