A Bachelor of Science in virtual reality and gaming combines the technical skills of computer science with the imaginative nature of visual arts to build an immersive gaming experience for an enthusiastic audience. By the end of the program, you will have the skills to code video games that function like interactive movies.
The VR & Gaming program at Bowie State University introduces you to the science, algorithms, concepts and theories behind computer games and virtual reality. It exposes you to concepts in augmented reality, mixed reality, virtual reality, and other forms of alternate, expanded and immersive reality applications. When you complete the program, you will have a full understanding of digital media, design thinking, operating systems, information security and object-oriented programming.

At Bowie State University, your curriculum will emphasize the fundamentals of diversity, inclusion, ethics and immersive technology. You can even visit the Entrepreneurship Innovation Center and learn about Bulldog Pitch, which prepares you to sell your ideas and concepts to investors.
You will be able to contribute to research that explores the socioeconomic, political and cultural impact of VR and gaming. The program will prepare you as an ethical and creative professional ready to enter careers in entertainment, research, education, military, sports and other in-demand industries.

You must complete 146 credits to earn your Bachelor of Science in virtual reality and gaming.
The degree program is broken into the four primary requirements outlined below:
- General Education: 47 Credits
- Core Courses: 42 Credits
- Supporting Requirements: 24 Credits
- VR & Gaming Specific Requirements: 33 Credits

The Department of Computer Science, in collaboration with the Department of Fine and Performing Arts, has secured various university partnerships that provide access to exclusive internship and career opportunities. You can proactively leverage formal relationships with Laika Animation Studios, A+E Networks, Megamind Media, Octet Productions, Adobe, Prince George's Arts and Humanities Council, and many more organizations in the pipeline to advance your career prospects.
You can also join Bulldog Coders, a group of students passionate about game development, who meet weekly to discuss new concepts and ideas in video game development. They participate in various activities and competitions, most recently with Booz Allen Hamilton and the CIA.
Handshake
After enrolling, take advantage of Bowie State's many opportunities and get familiar with Handshake. Handshake is an online database for Bowie State students that allows thousands of employers to post internships and job openings. Use this tool to secure an internship while you study or to jump-start your career after you graduate.
Career Outlook
Since 2020, the gaming industry has generated more revenue than movies and North American sports combined, and that figure is expected to surge as the industry continues to grow. A Bachelor of Science in virtual reality and gaming can prepare you for a career as a software developer, computer programmer, computer and information research scientist, or gameplay tester.

Scholarships
Bowie State students have access to an array of scholarships–each with its own set of criteria for consideration. New students are automatically considered for awards based on SAT/ACT scores and GPA provided on admission applications.
