VCDMA Minors
The Department of Fine and Performing Arts offers minors in visual communication & digital media arts (VCDMA) for non-majors. Through these programs, students gain expertise in specific areas of visual communication and media arts to become adequately prepared for life after graduation. Bowie State University is the first and only HBCU to offer an exciting new minor in Hip-Hop Studies and Visual Culture.

Hip-Hop Studies and Visual Culture Minor
This course of study focuses on research, critical discourse, and creative projects on hip-hop and its elements as expressed through, but not limited to: DJ-ing, MC‐ing, Graffiti, B-Boy-ing (Dance) and most importantly, knowledge. The minor will also allow opportunities for research on visual culture, technology, contemporary art, pop culture, design, and media. VCDMA Minor
A minor in VCDMA requires completion of 21 studio hours and 3 semester hours in Art/design history, visual culture, etc. for total (minimum) of 24 credit hours. Please refer to VCDMA minor guidelines (pdf) for more information. Students seeking to minor must meet with a faculty advisor to design a program based on the students' needs and program requirements. See a VCDMA academic advisor for a list of approved courses.

Visual Culture and Museum Studies
The Baltimore/Washington, DC metropolitan area is surrounded by countless opportunities related to fine arts, preservation, and research in the visual arts. The minor supports students with interest in careers and research areas related to art history, theory, criticism, as well as pop culture and museum-related studies. The minor will also empower and prepare students for working in the local and national museums, galleries, and arts organizations. Students seeking a deeper dive into any of our concentration areas can choose to expand their program to a minor.
