Why a Master of Applied Biotechnology & Molecular Biology at Bowie State?

At Bowie State University, you’ll receive hands-on training in advanced molecular biology, drug discovery, cellular biology, and biochemistry to solve real-world problems to train for jobs both in academia and industry. Our diverse faculty provides training that blends scientific thought process with hands-on training and grant writing skills.  

We provide hands-on training in state-of-the-art equipments that gives you the skills to confidently navigate the latest industry equipment. When you choose Bowie State, you’re choosing an affordable graduate program that increases your employability, earning potential and future success.  

What to Expect 

You must complete 31 credit hours to be eligible for graduation. Credit hours will include core courses, seminars, restricted electives, presentations, mentored lab training, and either thesis research or a comprehensive exam, depending on your preferred track. 

Thesis Option: You will complete 24 credits of core and supporting courses and 12 credits of electives. You will also receive training in grant and manuscript writing skills and designing and conducting experiments in a specific discipline. See catalogs for full course breakdown. [Link to catalogs] 

Non-thesis Option: You will complete 19 credits of core courses and 12 elective courses. You will learn through an industry-specific internship or conduct research with department faculty over the summer. Build Your Career Skills   

You can gain valuable career skills through internships and develop laboratory experience from research opportunities with faculty members. You practice advanced lab techniques as early as your first and second semesters and are introduced to industry professionals to begin building your professional network.

Because our comprehensive program combines animal cell, microbial and plant biology curriculum you’ll have a broad range of employability opportunities. You can go on to a successful career as a research specialist, genomics scientist, laboratory director, process developer or microbiologist.

Graduate Resources

We’ve compiled a list of resources to help you navigate your graduate studies and get the most out of your educational experience. Make an appointment to receive writing assistance, reserve a private study space or contact Disability Support Services for additional accommodations.   

Graduate Assistantships

You can apply for a limited number of graduate assistantships and receive a monthly stipend and a tuition waiver for 9 credit hours a semester. You will work 20 hours a week as a researcher, teacher, or administrative assistant.  

To qualify, be a full-time graduate/doctoral student with at least 9 completed credits and a GPA of 3.5 or higher.  

Deadlines:  

  • Spring Appointments: Second Friday of November 
  • Fall Appointments: Last Friday in March
