Chemistry Major
Who will find a cure for cancer? What tools can reduce pollution? How can we provide access to clean drinking water in poor nations? From the food we eat to the air we breathe, chemistry is the key to solving life’s biggest puzzles and resolving our most pressing global issues. At Bowie State, our students get the knowledge and technical skills they need to develop solutions that could change the world. Our expert faculty guide students through interdisciplinary research in everything from drug discovery to food insecurity. Through experiential learning, chemistry graduates will emerge as innovators ready to take on challenges in this in-demand field.
Through a combination of lectures and inquiry-based laboratory activities, students study foundational areas required for forensics, pre-pharmacy and computational chemistry. Cutting-edge research and instructional labs in the Center for Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Nursing provide the resources students need to prepare for success.
As a chemistry major, you will:
- Explore major concepts and theoretical principles in organic, inorganic, analytical and physical
- Master scientific research techniques by conducting experiments, analyzing data, interpreting results and employing safe laboratory practices.
- Evaluate scientific information using state-of-the-art equipment including, but not limited to a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometer, X-ray diffraction system and biochemical instrumentation.
