Information for Parents
As students matriculate on their college journey, they face numerous opportunities and challenges. One significant challenge is the potential exposure to substance use. According to SAMHSA, young adults 18-25 have the highest rates of illicit drug use. However, research from The Maryland Collaborative on students 18-25 showed that parental permissiveness is strongly associated with student alcohol and cannabis use, no matter their living situation – at home, on-campus, or in off-campus housing.
This means, as parents, you play a crucial role in guiding your college student to make healthy and responsible choices. By maintaining open lines of communication, discussing the risks associated with alcohol and drug use, and setting clear expectations, you provide a strong foundation for your student’s well-being. Your influence, communication, and support are vital in preventing substance use. Together, we can empower our college students to thrive and make choices that lead to a bright and healthy future.
