Heritage Award – Honoring Leadership

 Calvin G. Butler Jr., CEO, Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE)
Calvin G. Butler Jr. became chief executive officer of Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE) on March 1, 2014. Butler previously served as BGE’s senior vice president, regulatory and external affairs. Butler also served as Exelon’s senior vice president of corporate affairs and held other leadership positions within Exelon and BGE’s sister company, ComEd (Chicago). Butler played a critical role in helping to successfully navigate company and stakeholder relations during the merger between Exelon and Constellation Energy.

 B. Doyle Mitchell Jr., President & CEO, Industrial Bank
B. Doyle Mitchell Jr. is President and CEO of Industrial Bank, the largest minority-owned commercial bank in the Washington Metropolitan area and the sixth largest African-American owned financial institution in the country. Industrial Bank was founded on August 22, 1934 and is celebrating 80 years of service.

Flame of Faith Award – Honoring Service to the Community & Philanthropy

 Thomas Moorehead, CEO & Owner, Sterling Premier Group and Moorehead Properties, Inc.
Moorehead has distinguished himself through his service to the BSU Male Initiative, a mentoring program for male BSU students that was established by President Mickey L. Burnim. The honorees’ companies have also had strong representation on the university’s governing boards.

Torch of Truth Award – Honoring the Alumni Heritage of Bowie State University

 Toni Braxton, Entertainer Grammy-Award Winning Singer/Songwriter (invited)
While attending BSU to obtain a teaching degree, she was discovered and her singing career took off. She’s a seven-time Grammy Award winner.
 

 

 Traviss Green (’01), Principal Business Development Manager, Lockheed Martin Corporation
Green is the chief architect of Bowie State’s first signature program – the Education Innovation Initiative (EI2). He also serves on BSU’s College of Arts and Sciences Advisory Board and chairs the Executive Advisory Board of BSU College of Education.

 

 Betty Brown Turner (’62, ’81), Retired Educator
Turner is a lifetime member of the BSU National Alumni Association (BSUNAA) and a committed leadership donor to the 1865 Society, Goodloe Circle. She is a member of the BSU College of Education Advisory Board and previously served on the BSU Foundation Board. Under her leadership as president of the BSUNAA, a campaign was launched to raise funds to purchase the historic Goodloe Alumni House.

Founders Promise Award – Honoring University Service

 Deborah McClure, Staff Assistant, Division of Student Affairs, Bowie State University
McClure has worked in the Division of Student Affairs in various capacities for 45 years, serving under 13 deans of students or vice presidents for student affairs and six university presidents. She has also been a member of numerous campus-wide committees, including the presidential search, homecoming, commencement, and university accreditation committees.

Military Service Award – Honoring Exceptional Military Service

 Colonel Edward V. DeShields Jr. (’89), Active Duty Army, Chief DAMO-FMP
DeShields earned his commission as an Air Defense Artillery officer in 1987 through ROTC at Bowie State. His military honors include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal with seven oak leaf clusters, the Army Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster, and the Joint Service Achievement Medal.

 Colonel Charles C. Gibson (’87), Active Duty Army, CECOM Chief of Staff, Aberdeen Proving Ground
Gibson’s awards include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (fourth award), Army Commendation Medal (fourth award), Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star Device, and Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal with Bronze Star Device.

 Colonel Robert W. Myles Jr. (’89), Active Duty, Senior Military Assistant (Acquisition)
Myles’ awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Army Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters, and Army Achievement Medal with one oak leaf cluster.
