His tenure has been marked by a steady focus on enhancing academic programs, assuring fiscal integrity, and modernizing facilities to provide state-of-the-art learning environments.
Under Dr. Burnim, Bowie State has added eight new degree programs, including a doctorate in computer science and a bachelor’s degree in the emerging field of bioinformatics. The growing prominence of the university’s science and technology programs has provided a foundation for national recognition and attracted increasing interest from corporate and government partners.
Recognizing the importance of physical resources in supporting student success, Dr. Burnim has directed significant attention to modernizing learning spaces throughout the university. A new Fine and Performing Arts Center and a new Student Center have been added. A Center for Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Nursing complex is set to open in 2017.
The solid fiscal foundation established during Dr. Burnim’s tenure is a hallmark of his commitment to integrity and accountability. In addition, increasing support for research initiatives has yielded substantial growth in grant and contract funding.
