Success in academia, education, digital humanities and creative writing often depends on information that can be attained through research and shared through publications. At Bowie State University, our Master of Arts in English program prepares you to become an expert in a topic of your choosing–such as film, Afro-futurism or literature in global politics. Our flexible program provides a distinctive approach to literature, language and rhetoric and their effectiveness for the next step of your career in today’s evolving communications landscape.  

Why a Master of Arts in English at Bowie State?

The Master of Arts in English program is a flexible, practical, and affordable way to increase your employability and earning potential. Our program grants you the freedom to become a subject matter expert by allowing you to conduct your own research, design your own reading list and work with your own three-member faculty committee. The program is designed to help you develop close relationships with faculty members while remaining in control of your educational experience.  

What to Expect 

The Master of Arts in English program requires 36 semester hours to graduate and offers two tracks: thesis track or portfolio track.  

Thesis Track: To complete the thesis track, you need to complete 12 core credit hours, 18 elective credit hours and 6 thesis credit hours. See the graduate catalog for a complete breakdown of courses.

Build Your Career Skills   

There are several opportunities for you to enhance your learning experience while completing your Master of Arts in English at Bowie State. In addition to our Graduate Student Association and International Student Association, you may choose to join the English Honors Society, Sigma Tau Delta. 

Handshake

After enrolling, take advantage of Bowie State's many opportunities and get familiar with Handshake. Handshake is an online database for Bowie State students that allows thousands of employers to post internships and job openings. Use this tool to secure an internship while you study or to jump-start your career after you graduate.

Career Outlook  

When you complete your Master of Arts in English at Bowie State University, you develop the tools to increase your earning potential. You may choose to teach in a K-12 system, complete your Ph.D. and teach in academia, or work as a copy editor, grant writer, PR specialist, podcast writer or blogger.

Graduate Resources

We’ve compiled a list of resources to help you navigate your graduate studies and get the most out of your educational experience. Make an appointment to receive writing assistance, reserve a private study space or contact Disability Support Services for additional accommodations.   

Graduate Assistantships

You can apply for a limited number of graduate assistantships and receive a monthly stipend and a tuition waiver for 9 credit hours a semester. You will work 20 hours a week as a researcher, teacher, or administrative assistant.  

To qualify, be a full-time graduate/doctoral student with at least 9 completed credits and a GPA of 3.5 or higher.  

Deadlines:  

  • Spring Appointments: Second Friday of November 
  • Fall Appointments: Last Friday in March
