Autonomous Technologies Lab

The Autonomous Technologies lab specializes in designing and developing algorithms and technologies geared towards improving the ability of both software systems and hardware components to perform autonomously in real time environments. Integration of both hardware and software components to create autonomous artifacts that can operate under different size, weight, power and time constraints is also a major thrust in the lab. Research in the lab fall under the broad fields of artificial intelligence, robotics and bioinformatics — including machine learning, data mining, image processing, natural language understanding,  time-series analysis, knowledge representation, common sense reasoning, metacognition and sensor data integration.

The lab is equipped with single board computers (Raspberry Pi, Odroid and Intel Edison), several camera sensors (Pixy, DUO3D, PX4flow and Zed), lab-built terrain and aerial vehicles that range in size from the small-sized Parallax Inc's ActivityBot (6” x 6” X 6”) to the medium sized NXT/EV3/Edison/Snapdragon controlled rovers (~12” X 10” X 8 “) to the sturdy Dr. Robot’s Sputnik3 (36” X 18 “ X 16”).

Undergraduate and graduate students explore different research avenues within the lab as part of their course curriculum for thesis or dissertation work. The lab also offers opportunities for students to engage in hands-on learning and experimentation outside the classroom in order to gain work experience. K-12 students are given mentoring support for FIRST programs (FLL, FRC and FTC) and science projects related to the research area. Several K-12 students from the local high schools have done internships at the lab.
