Research Compliance
At Bowie State University, we ensure that research is conducted with high standards of integrity and accountability aligned with strong ethical principles, regulatory requirements, and institutional policies.
The Research Compliance function provides guidance, oversight, and resources to the university community to navigate the landscape of research regulations. We are committed to protecting the rights, dignity, health, safety, and privacy of research subjects, and promoting the responsible conduct of research. The Institutional Review Board (IRB) is supported by our office.
Our mission is to foster a culture of integrity in research by supporting faculty, staff, and students navigate key areas of concern in research compliance such as:
- Human Subjects Protection: Ensuring the ethical treatment of participants, including informed consent, privacy, and minimizing harm. This includes overseeing the Institutional Review Board (IRB) processes.
- Responsible Conduct of Research: Promoting ethical research practices through training, resources, and consultations on topics such as data management, authorship, peer review, and mentorship.
- Research Security and Export Controls: Supporting researchers in understanding and adhering to U.S. regulations governing the export of sensitive technologies, data, and materials.
- Data Security and Privacy: Protecting sensitive data, particularly when dealing with personally identifiable or proprietary information.
- Conflict of Interest: Identifying, managing, and mitigating potential conflicts of interest to maintain transparency and trust in the research process.
