Richard Lucas

From Freshman Class president to intern on Capitol Hill, Richard Lucas III is on track to fulfill his dream of becoming a U.S. Senator. He’s discovering the broad array of experiences Bowie State has to offer him as a history and government major.

Initially accepted at a number of different schools, Richard said he chose Bowie State because it was a smart value, offering quality programs at an affordable cost. “Now my friends at other schools marvel at the kinds of opportunities I’ve gotten through Bowie State,” he said. He’s worked as a legislative aide in the Maryland General Assembly, earned a fellowship to attend a summer pre-law program, and interned with the Congressional Black Caucus.

Richard said at Bowie State he has found his strengths and learned to overcome his weaknesses. “I learned time management and study skills the hard way my freshman year. Then I learned self-discipline, humility, and acceptance of those who are different from me. Bowie is such a melting pot of different cultures.”

Close relationships with professors have been important in Richard’s development. He said professors take a strong interest in all their students, opening doors to opportunities for them to grow.

“Bowie State has helped me develop a stronger sense of self, an understanding of who I am and how I can effect change and make a difference,” he said.
