(BOWIE, Md.) – Bowie State University has joined forces with Radiant Digital Solutions to explore novel applications of emerging technologies in a new public-private partnership intended to invigorate entrepreneurship, moving technology innovation out of the laboratory and into the marketplace.

BSU doctoral computer science students and faculty joined Radiant-funded research projects to collaborate on groundbreaking research and innovation projects. The teams are performing research at the concept level creating prototypes that will result in innovative outcomes.

"Bowie State University is very excited about this partnership with Radiant, because it connects our students who are doing groundbreaking research with these researchers that lead in technology and are working to shape the future of tech innovations,” said Dr. Rosemary Shumba, Chair of BSU Department of Computer Science. “We are working together to produce a trained workforce who will be able to answer today's most pressing challenges and create technology to improve lives.”

As digital transformation accelerates, emerging technologies play an increasingly critical role in differentiating businesses and providing a competitive edge. This partnership demonstrates both Bowie State’s and Radiant’s commitment to providing opportunities for diverse students and applying innovative research towards solving practical problems.

“The Radiant and Bowie State partnership is a powerful combination. Bowie State has brought a multifaceted set of resources, skills, and talent from its faculty and students,” said Shankar Rachakonda, Radiant Digital Chief Executive Officer. “Radiant’s experience in delivering digital transformation solutions in public and private sectors allows us to collaborate on creativity, design thinking, and execution in building the next generation of transformative enterprise and digital products and platforms.”

The research involves projects covering three areas: Edge Computing, GAN Processing, and Synthetic Data Research. Four doctoral students are paired with faculty members who serve as project lead and provide mentoring to the students for each area. Doctoral students Ruth Olusegun and Sophie Johnson-Shapoval are working alongside Professor Bo Yang on Edge Computing Concept Research. Mahfoudh Batarfi and Professor Manohar Mareboyana have paired up to work together on GAN Processing Concept Research. Francis Onodueze and Professor Darsana Josyula are working together on Synthetic Data Research. The projects all began in June 2021. The Edge Computing and GAN Processing Concept Research projects will continue through September 2021, while the Synthetic Data Research project will continue through December 2021.

“This groundbreaking research will undoubtedly solve complex problems, which means driving the economic growth of the country,” said Dr. Shumba. “By having our students participate in research involving industrial applications that impacts the economy, we’re creating a workforce that’s relevant.”
