Entrepreneurship Academy Launches New Speaker Series

Inaugural Ask an Entrepreneur Session Features Bel Air Native

(BOWIE, Md.) – Bowie State students with an interest in entrepreneurship got a peek inside the journey of a local  entrepreneur from Bel Air, Md. who used an entrepreneurial mindset to turn an accounting degree into multi-dimensional international success. James Beers shared his story as the inaugural speaker in the Ask an Entrepreneur series hosted by the BSU Entrepreneurship Academy in the new Entrepreneurship Living Learning Community.

This new series will allow students from all disciplines to have unique opportunities to engage with successful entrepreneurs as inspiration for envisioning their own futures. Entrepreneurs in different fields will be featured monthly.

With his accounting background, Beers founded Beers & Cutler, a firm that became the largest Washington, DC-based accounting group before successfully leveraging a merger. The business acumen he developed led to a new role in London as co-chair of the McArthur Glen Group, Europe’s leading developer and manager of designer outlet centers, and later to roles as a business advisor in a variety of sectors.

Beers’ talk with students provided insights into entrepreneurial thinking for business development, exit strategies, and exploring opportunities in different markets. Students probed his experience with questions ranging from how to find clients, to how to stay motivated, to how to maintain work-life balance.

“This new Ask an Entrepreneur speaker series is part of our expanding entrepreneurial ecosystem that will challenge every BSU student, regardless of discipline, to explore new ways of seeing the world, building a network and entrepreneurship as a pathway,” said Johnetta Hardy, director of the Entrepreneurship Academy. “Development of an entrepreneurial mindset will go a long way to ensuring student and graduate success.”
