(BOWIE, Md.) – Four Bowie State University students, who advanced to the playoffs in a national trivia competition, will face teams from other historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in the virtual Honda Campus All-Star Challenge (HCASC), livestreamed on the HCASC website March 20-21, 2021.

The Bowie State team will participate in the HCASC Sweet 16 round, with the goal of advancing to the April 17-20 National Championship Tournament, where they hope to compete for the $75,000 grand prize.

The Bowie State team members are:

  • Beatrice Amoateng (team captain), a senior government major
  • Benvindo Chicha, a junior bioinformatics major
  • Daniel Clark, a senior computer technology major
  • Steeven Tabuada, a senior bioinformatics major

Dr. Monika Gross, director of the BSU Honors Program, and Bowie State alumnus Carroll Reed III ('17) are the team’s coaches. Reed was the BSU team captain in 2017, when the team finished second and won a $30,000 grant for the university. The 2021 tournament marks the 18th year that Bowie State has participated in the HCASC.

Now in its 32nd season, the HCASC is America’s premier academic competition between HBCU students and awards $350,000 in institutional grants from Honda annually. The HCASC annally brings together 48 HBCU teams to compete in a fast-paced game played in a modified round robin format. The top two teams out of eight divisions advance to the Sweet 16, a single-elimination playoff. The final two teams that emerge from the playoffs compete for the grand prize for their schools, while teams eliminated in earlier rounds receive smaller grants.
